Ask Vivienne Westwood

For over 35 years she has had a knack for combining the traditional with the outrageous. From defining London's punk movement in the 70s to creating that extravagant wedding dress that Carrie wore in Sex and the City: The Movie, her designs have always shocked and turned heads. This December, after being deemed inappropriate by a government spokesman in 2004, the V&A retrospective on her work, Vivienne Westwood: A Life in Fashion, will finally make its way to Hong Kong. Vivienne Westwood will now take your questions.

You're one of my favorite designers and you have such a unique vision when it comes to fashion. What inspires you most when you design?
-
2
Vivienne- have tattoos ever been an influence in your work? Does your history have any kind of connection to the world of tattoo or body art? If you have something to say about tattoo and body art can I get someone to interview you for an article on the subject? The book is a tattoo and body art history book- mostly connected to NYC.
thanks

3
You've worked with some of the great fashion icons of our era, who is your favorite?
-
4
You have always been very politically active. How does that relate to your design/inspiration besides the obvious rebeliousness we all adore?
-
5
Vivienne- I recently watched an interview with you where you recommended that people should read more and start with Cormac McCarthy's THE ROAD. I followed your advice and found the book incredible. Do you have any other reading recommendations?
-
6
You've created a variety of iconic ensembles but if you could only be remembered for one outfit what would it be?
-
7
Is punk dead?

Greetings Ma'am, knowing that your art (Fashion, specifically) over the decades comes a great line of attention to detail; I admire your sense to merge the traditions of English clothing with new patterns and forms. I want to know if it was, at first, difficult to remain true to the fact that you wanted to "pay homage" to the past while injecting contemporary themes and ideas??
-
9
In light of all the hype surrounding the Alexander McQueen collaboration with Target, would you consider doing one as well, and with which company/brand? (something larger than say what you've already done with Nine West and Melissa shoes)

[...] of this lady. Now fortunately for all you Westwood worshippers, you can actually log onto the Times web site and submit questions that you've always wanted to ask [...]
-
11
Greetings! If you were able to choose and work with any current designer, who would you choose and why?
-
12
Is there any design created by another designer you wish you had constructed?
-
13
How will an increasing use of internet affect the future of fashion?
-
14
Viv,
Apart from your mood or the latest style, how do you get inspired on what to wear everyday? Do you look up your favorite fashion icons and go from there like the rest of us? -
15
What was the hardest thing you overcame in regards to fashion, wether it was getting started or getting ideas so a season, and what did you do to overcome it?
-
16
You've been in the fashion business long enough to witness the rough change of the fashion direction through decades, in your opinion which decade held the most exciting environment to create a revolution as we may say in the fashion world?
We love you Vivian
thanx -
17
When did you realize that you wanted to be in the fashion industry and how did your family react to your decision?
-
18
With the recent election of President Obama, the world seemed to resonate a sense of hope, peace, and unity. It reminds me of a far off fantasy when countries become borderless and humanity will have to stand as one united tribe as they explore the vastness of space. We're sure to encounter aliens. What would the "uniform" of humanity look like? What would you design to define our world, our culture in this capacious universe?
-
19
I am such a fan of your point of view on fashion. how is the daily life of a fashion legend looks like ?
-
20
If there were no more needles in the world, what would you do to let out your creativity?
-
21
Hi Vivienne..
Love YOU! Was wondering if you ever had the chance to work with Isabella Blow?
I hold her in my top five fashion inspirations along with YOU, McQUEEN, GAULTIER & MIYAKE..If you had, could you please share a memorable experience??

22
what can you say to inspire the young designers of our generation? Amidst the PETA protests, economic problem and the need to go green?
-
23
How would you describe your overall design technique? You've grown and developed your own, instantly recognizable cuts, shapes etc without the teachings of fashion school. Where did/does it come from?
-
24
Why did you circumcise your eldest son, Ben?
-
25
If you were to choose an icon, be it from fashion, cinema, history etc.. to represent Vivienne Westwood- the brand, who would it be and why?
