Ask Magic Johnson

Magic JohnsonJeff Haynes / Reuters

He's one of the greatest NBA point guards of all time and probably the most famous American living with HIV. The former Laker was diagnosed with the disease in 1991 and went on to be an All-Star MVP, Olympic gold medalist, abstinence advocate and champion for improving urban communities. Along the way, he also became a pro at using his fame as a marketing tool. Magic Johnson's latest book, 32 Ways to be a Champion in Business, goes on sale Nov. 18. Magic,

I'm your #1 fan outside of your family, and continue to be proud of your work educating the world about HIV and AIDS, as well as your successful ventures in business. My question is for someone wishing to get started in business, beyond having a written business plans, what are the steps a person should take to obtain help with financing, etc. to get started in business?

is magic johnson still living with the hiv virus?

  • 17

    Hey Magic,

I know that you have spent some time here, and prior to your contracting HIV, had led a fairly carefree lifestyle typical of many elite pro athletes, which is understandable considering your wealth and popularity. Certainly, your lifestyle before HIV was a factor in acquiring HIV. Knowing what you know now, and the fact that you seem to be able to live a somewhat normal life with HIV, would you have changed any of your lifestyle had you known the consequences, or would you say that the fun and freedom enjoyed then was worth learning of the infection and living with it? Also, there seems to be the possibility that certain bone marrow transplants may be an unexpected cure for HIV/AIDS; do you plan to look into this?

I am a recently retired professor. I have followed your career since Michigan State; the Lakers since they moved to LA, and NBA basketball from the time prior to the use of the 24 second clock, and I still follow the game, though with less enthusiasm as in the past. I recall an article several years ago where the coaches listed you and Larry Bird over Michael Jordan as the players with whom they would prefer to start a franchise. My question is why does the media obsess over Michael Jordan? Why do so called basketball experts and TV pundits speak emphatically that Michael was "the best ever" as though there was no room for debate? Michael did not make those around him better as did you and Bird. Michael did not lead the Bulls to the records you and Bird did during your first years. Michael did not ever come close to your accomplishments during your rookie year in a championship year. Without the trades and the years adding a strong roster around him, I doubt if they would call him the best ever... he clearly was not.
